IGRAC presented in the international training workshop ‘Integrated Water Resource Analytical Techniques and Remote Sensing Applications in Support of Water Resource Assessments in Central Asian Countries’. This workshop which was held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from 14 to 18 September, was organised by UNESCO, JSC, ISTC and USGS. Delegations from Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan all participated in this workshop.

IGRAC Presentation

IGRAC presented its Global Groundwater Information System (GGIS), which is an interactive, web-based portal to groundwater-related information and knowledge. The main objective of the system is to collect, analyze and disseminate information on groundwater resources globally to help communicating groundwater related issues to water experts, decision makers as well as the general public.

After focusing on other modules such as the Global Overview and TWAP Transboundary Aquifers, the GGRETA module was presented. This module contains data collected during in-depth assessments of transboundary aquifers in three case study locations, conducted within the framework of the GGRETA project. One of these case study locations is the Pretashkent Aquifer, which is located on the territory of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in Central Asia.

Potential of GGIS

The GGIS was developed based on methodologies developed during various projects that made use of this platform. Similar assessments can be performed for any transboundary aquifer. The GGIS is a generic information management system and new modules can be developed to serve specific tasks.
