IGRAC at SADC GMI launch and SADC Groundwater Management workshop

On the 20th of September 2016, the newly established SADC Groundwater Management Institute (SADC GMI) was officially launched during a SADC Groundwater Management Workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa.

SADC GMI is a regional centre for groundwater, which is based in Bloemfontijn, South Africa, and works under the strategic guidance of the SADC Secretariat. IGRAC’s Senior Researcher Geert-Jan Nijsten was invited to attend the launch and to present IGRAC’s current and recent activities in Southern Africa during the workshop.

IGRAC’s Contribution

During the groundwater management workshop, IGRAC presented an overview of the work IGRAC has done in recent years related to groundwater in SADC. IGRAC’s work has a strong focus on groundwater monitoring, information & knowledge management and assessment of transboundary aquifers.

IGRAC and Southern Africa

IGRAC has been involved in groundwater assessment projects like Ramotswa, TWAP and GGRETA that include Southern African aquifers. In addition, IGRAC has developed GGIS modules for all these projects as well as the Africa Groundwater Portal. This portal also included the SADC Hydrogeological Map and Atlas.
