IGRAC presentations on economics, serious gaming and transboundary aquifers at IAH 2017

From 25 to 29 September 2017, the Croatian national chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) hosted the 44th annual IAH congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The overall theme of this edition was “Groundwater Heritage and Sustainability” and IGRAC Director Neno Kukuric was invited to give several presentations, moderate a thematic lecture on DIKTAS and contribute to the GRIPP meeting.

On the opening day of the congress, a thematic lecture was held on the DIKTAS. As IGRAC’s Project Leader of the DIKTAS (Protection and Sustainable Use of the Dinaric Karst Transboundary Aquifer System) project, Kukuric was invited to moderate this session on karst aquifer system that covers Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro. 

Value of Groundwater

IGRAC’s first presentation was given also on Monday and was focused on groundwater economics. In his presentation ‘The value of Groundwater and Groundwater Heritage’, Kukuric told how groundwater depletion confronts companies with existential threats, urging them to assess risks and use groundwater in evidence-base, sustainable manner. IGRAC’s ‘Investor risk analysis: Why groundwater matters’ formed the foundation of this presentation and was shared with the attendees.

As one of the core group members of the GRIPP initiative, IGRAC contributed to Thursday’s 7th GRIPP partners meeting. During this meeting, GRIPP partners and other interested parties discussed the progress in GRIPP’s activities, partnership building, branding, product development and project initiatives. 

Groundwater Serious Game

On Friday, IGRAC gave a presentation on it groundwater game. In the presentation ‘The Groundwater Game: A Serious Game on Improving Groundwater Management through Cooperation and Collective Action’ was shared how this serious game was successfully used in Ethiopia, Niger and Tanzania as part of the GroFutures project

Indicator based transboundary aquifer assessment

Later that day, a presentation was given on ‘Indicator based approach to prioritise transboundary aquifers at risk from development stress, pollution or climate change’ in which Kukuric explained the indicator based approach used in the groundwater component of the Transboundary Waters Assessment Programme (TWAP).
