Groundwater Governance training for Department of Groundwater Resources in Thailand

IGRAC was invited by the Department of Groundwater Resources from Thailand to lecture in a training course on groundwater governance. The training course marked the closure of a project on groundwater governance conducted by the department. The training took place from 2 to 4 July in Bangkok.

IGRAC’s director Neno Kukuric and senior researcher Geert-Jan Nijsten provided in six lectures covering a wide range of topics. Topics included an introductory lecture to Groundwater Governance, a lecture on Groundwater and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and lectures on Groundwater Governance in the Netherlands, the Importance of Information systems, Transboundary aquifers, and Emerging issues in groundwater management and governance.

Lectures on the Australian water reform and the Water-Food-Energy nexus were provided by colleagues from the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. On the 3rd and last day of the training course, partners from different Thai universities presented the findings from different research projects, proposing models for stakeholder engagement in the country.

Aproximately 80 professionals from the central office and from the various regional offices from the Groundwater Department attended the course, and lectures were interspersed with interesting discussions and debates.
