The Socio-Hydrogeology Network of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH-SHG) was recently launched to promote the integration of social science into hydrogeology. One of its first actions to promote this integration has been the initiative for a special issue of the open access journal Water. For this special issue on 'Socio-Hydrogeology in Groundwater Resources Assessments and Management', a call for manuscripts was launched with a submission deadline of  30 April 2021.

About the Special Issue

In 2015, socio-hydrogeology was developed as a new discipline targeting the systematic inclusion of the social dimension into hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical assessments. Overall, it aims to define new frameworks for assessing the reciprocity between groundwater and its consumers/polluters (i.e. “how human actions exert pressure on groundwater resources” and “how scarce and/or polluted groundwater influences human wellbeing.”)

With a special issue of Water, guest editors Viviana Re (University of Pisa) and Theresa Frommen (IRI THESys Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin) aim to foster the discussion for all interested in interdisciplinary research, thus presenting the challenges and opportunities within this emerging research field.

Manuscript submission are accepted till the 30th of April 2021. Information about the submission process can be found here.

Socio-hydrogeology network

The goal of the newly developed Socio-hydrogeology network of IAH is to promote the integration of social sciences into hydrogeology and to include local perspectives into hydrogeological assessment by developing concepts how inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation and research can be carried out. Furthermore, IAH-SHG aims to highlight the importance of science communication and to serve as a platform for hydrogeologists who already work at the interface between society and groundwater.
