GGMN and Canadian groundwater monitoring network directly connected


The Global Groundwater Monitoring Network (GGMN) is now connected to the Groundwater Information Network of Canada (GIN) through a SOS2.0 connection. This is the first time that GGMN is connected through the SOS2.0 system to another web application to retrieve groundwater levels monitoring data. The data are open and will be updated once per week. Sensor Observation Service 2.0

The Sensor Observation Service version 2.0 (SOS 2.0) is a standard from The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) that allows the sensor data to be managed in an interoperable way. It provides an open, well-defined application programming interface for managing measured data and metadata from deployed sensors. 

Groundwater Information Network of Canada

The Groundwater Information Network of Canada (GIN) enhances national groundwater management through increased access to groundwater information. GIN connects groundwater level monitoring data from authoritative sources. Provincial and territorial collaborators include British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, Nova Scotia, Yukon and Newfoundland and Labrador, while international collaborators include the USGS and others. The GIN portal provides web services conforming to open geospatial standards (WMS, WFS, SOS), to enable computer-to-computer requests.

GGMN’s mission

The Global Groundwater Monitoring Network (GGMN) is a participative, web-based network of networks, set up to improve quality and accessibility of groundwater monitoring information and subsequently our knowledge on the state of groundwater resources.

SOS2.0 allows to automatize the transfer of large amounts of data and contributes to the homogenization of monitored groundwater data. Therefore, the implementation of the SOS2.0 connection contributes directly to GGMN’s aim of improving accessibility of groundwater information, and the next step is to include other countries in our network through SOS2.0.
