On 8-11 April 2018, the 2nd Latin-American Symposium on Monitoring of Groundwater was held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Twelve years after the first symposium that resulted in the implementation of monitoring networks on federal and state level, this symposium was organised to discuss monitoring techniques and best practices. IGRAC Researcher Claudia Ruz Vargas was invited to present the Global Groundwater Monitoring Network (GGMN).

Ruz Vargas’ presentation on the GGMN was part of the preliminary programme on (global) water crises. In this presentation, she highlighted the importance of information systems, using IGRAC’s GGIS as best practice, and then showed functionalities of the GGMN portal. These functionalities include the option to search data in space and time, use several overlays, change transparency levels and create elevation profiles.
