On Tuesday 25 June 2019, about fifty attendants joined the first Water on Tap event of 2019. This session was dedicated to ‘Groundwater: The Invisible Resource’ and was the first in a series of four Water on Tap events. Water on Tap is powered by IHE Delft and IGRAC, and has the aim to bring water-related topics under the attention of the general public in a less formal setting. These events take place on the last Tuesday of the month at start at 20:00 hrs at De Gist in Delft, The Netherlands.

Groundwater: The invisible resource

Water on Tap Event

The opener of the new Water on Tap season was an event on groundwater. The first speaker to talk about this ‘invisible’ resource was Jan Nonner, former Associated Professor at IHE Delft and author of the book Introduction to Hydrogeology. As author if this book, he was the right person to familiarize the audience with the groundwater basics like what is an aquifer and where groundwater originates from.

This first presentation was followed by a quiz in which the audience formed groups and its their knowledge on groundwater. Then, it was time for the second presentation and that was given by Niels Hartog, Senior Scientific Researcher at KWR. After the broader introduction of Jan Nonner in the first presentation, Hartog decided to focus a bit more on a particular element of groundwater and that was groundwater quality. He touched on several kinds of pollution and on ways to treat groundwater. Hartog also explained how, in The Netherlands, the sand dunes play an important role in the purification process.
