Location: DELFT, The Netherlands (or remote, depending on Covid situation)
Deadline: 18-April-2021
Duration: ± 3 months

Background

The year 2022 will be the year of groundwater. World Water Day 2022 will have the theme ‘Groundwater, making the invisible visible’, the theme proposed by IGRAC. IGRAC will also play a substantial role in the World Water Development Report and also the Groundwater Summit.

As a contribution to strengthening of groundwater resource administration, a few groundwater partners (IGRAC, UNESCO-IHP, IAH and IWMI) have proposed to develop a comprehensive online Catalogue of Groundwater Governance & Management Tools, Measures and Instruments, including the options for supply-side/demand-side interventions and quality protection, and accompanied by a set of international case profiles considered to be exemplary practice.

Responsibilities

Your first priority will be to bring together existing /generic published work on management and governance tools, measures and instruments. The generic info covers principles, basic content and processes. Eventually, this will result in:

  • systematic description (fact sheets) of various approaches and provisions to effectively limit the water usage (from supply and demand side), protect groundwater and involve stakeholders.
  • Notes, comments & remarks on processes around creating adequate governance arrangements, building effective institutions, making essential linkages, redirecting available finance and implementing management planning processes.

You will also work on the development of a classified Case Profile Collection of specific cases of exemplary practice, with details the governance provisions and practical procedures that were needed to make solid progress in the context of each specific case. Sources of well described case profiles include the World Bank/GWP GWMATE Programme, the implementation of the EU-WFD-Groundwater Directive, IWMI-GRIPP work in South Asia/Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asian Development Bank projects in China. Reports of national and international organisations as well as publications in scientific journals will be systematically looked through for exemplary cases.

Education

We are looking for a highly motivated advanced student in the field of water governance, water management, hydrogeology or closely related studies, enrolled in a university within the EU.
