IGRAC event during 197th UNESCO Executive Board

On Tuesday 13 October 2015, IGRAC will be presented to delegates of the member states of UNESCO, during the 197th UNESCO Executive Board. During the session "Groundwater : Our Hidden Treasure", the main objective will be to show the importance of groundwater as freshwater source and discuss how IGRAC as UNESCO Category II Centre could assist Member States.

News reports regularly remind us that the freshwater resources hidden below the earth’s surface ( groundwater resources) are under threat, and that action is urgently needed for their preservation and sustainable management.

The establishment of plans for the sustainable management and governance of these precious water resources requires investments in science, capacity-building and – above all – in raising awareness about what is at stake.

The UNESCO International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC) has joined the UNESCO Water Family with the mission to build information systems that give free access to the existing knowledge on groundwater resources, to support capacity building in the management of these resources, to raise awareness, and to assist Member States.

You are warmly invited to join the event that will be organized at UNESCO’s Headquarters on 13 October 2015 to present an overview of the current state of the world’s groundwater resources and related challenges and on the most recent activities jointly performed by the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (UNESCO IHP) and the Centre. This event “Groundwater : Our Hidden Treasure” will take place from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm in Room IX of the UNESCO Fontenoy building (Level -1).
