Europe

Groundwater is an important source of drinking water for European countries, with even 75% of EU inhabitants depending on groundwater for their water supply. However, despite this high dependency, the level of groundwater stress is very low in this region as a result of sufficient aquifer recharge.

IGRAC in Europe

IGRAC has provided project management for the GEF-funded DIKTAS project, which is a groundwater assessment project with focus on the Dinaric Karst Aquifer System shared by Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro. Although about 25% of the world's population lives on or obtains its water from karst aquifers, this special type of aquifer is still poorly understood. Therefore, this first ever attempted globally to introduce sustainable integrated management principles in a transboundary karst freshwater aquifer, served as an interesting case study.
